Smiling is Infectious

This weekend, while away at Butlins with my besties, we went to see Bobby Davro, and I didn’t expect to come away feeling quite so touched.

At the end of the laughter, he shared something deeply personal — a poem his mum, now in the spirit world, had once shared with him. And in that moment, the room changed. It softened. You could feel how love, once given, doesn’t disappear. It lives on through memory, through words, through the way we carry someone with us.

Smile - Spike Milligan

Smiling is infectious

You catch it like the flu.

When someone smiled at me today

I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin.

When he smiled I realised

I'd passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile then realised it's worth.

A single smile just like mine could travel around the Earth.

So if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected.

Let's start an epidemic quick get the world infected!

The message behind those words is beautifully simple, yet quietly powerful. It reminds us that the smallest gestures — a smile, a kind glance, a moment of warmth — can travel far beyond the instant they’re given. We often underestimate how much impact we have on one another, especially in everyday moments that feel insignificant at the time.

A smile isn’t just an expression. It’s energy. It’s reassurance. It says I see you, even if only for a second. And when we offer that to someone else, they often pass it on without even realising. One gentle moment becomes two, then three, and suddenly the atmosphere shifts. The world feels a little lighter.

What struck me most was how relevant that message feels right now. Life can feel heavy, rushed, and uncertain. Many people are carrying things we’ll never know about. And yet, something as small as choosing kindness, choosing warmth, choosing softness, can ripple out in ways we’ll never witness.

It also felt like a quiet reminder from the spirit world itself — that love continues. That connection doesn’t end. That the lessons shared with us by those we love don’t fade when they’re no longer physically here. They live on in how we show up, how we treat others, and how we choose to move through the world.

I left feeling lighter. Not because everything is perfect, but because I was reminded that we all have the ability to shift the energy around us, even just a little. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

If nothing else, let it be a gentle nudge: if you feel a smile rising, don’t hold it back. You never know how far it might travel.
